Aims and Objectives of The Scottish Diaspora Forum

The Scottish Diaspora Forum aims to:

  • Explore the question “what is ‘Scottishness’?”
  • Debate the question ‘In this global interconnected age are we a country of 5 million or a potential community of more than 30 million’
  • Bring together leading minds to discuss and debate how the economic, intellectual, social and cultural capital of Scots and the Scottish Diaspora can work together now and in the future to serve the interests of Scotland & all Scots.
  • Explore issues of Scottish identity and common roots focusing on their relevance to modern Scotland at this unique and dynamic stage of our history.
  • Attract Diaspora Scots and those with a strong understanding of Diaspora issues to Scotland for this event.
  • Create a dynamic, ongoing Forum with local, national and international impact and relevance.
  • Engage and influence governments, business and grass roots communities- supporting & developing both short and long term relationships and initiatives.
  • Achieve exciting and visible outcomes; such as collaborative projects for young Scots and diaspora Scots to work together.

There is a vast pool of goodwill around the world among our diaspora. In this interconnected Internet age, Scotland is not just a country of 5-million, but a potential community of 30-million plus. We have to learn from the Armenians, Irish and Jews about building links across the seas.
— The Rt Hon George Reid
